We love to hike, camp, fish.. we love to get dirty!  We love to lay in the cool grass on a hot summer day. We swim in your creeks and lakes, and admire your oceans while they lull us into a comfort that allows us to regroup and recenter. You provide us with our absolutely loved oils, which have totally changed our outlook . We are sending thanks to God for creating this beautiful world that we love and that loves us back!

Today, I loved my child's teacher even more (didn't know that was possible) because they celebrated Earth Day, with some planting of bulbs in homemade pots (adorable!) !

We celebrated at home, too! I know everyone has probably noticed that lawns are covered in dandelions..but unlike some,  I love them! They are the first thing to show me that Spring is SURELY here!  They're such a resilient thing , just one sweep of a slight breeze and they multiply beyond belief! I really don't like seeing people spraying their lawns with herbicides to rid them of these pretty blooms (especially since herbicides are being linked to some cancers!) when scientist are currently studying dandelions to help FIGHT cancer! The irony!

I took today as an opportunity for a learning lesson for my children! They already know about oils since we use them often, but they didn't know we could make one ourselves!

Dandelion oil is great for stiff or sore joints and muscles when applied directly to the area, it is also awesome for dry skin. It's antioxidant and anti-fungal properties are surely what makes it so resilient! A lot of people use dandelions for teas and consumption, animals use them for nourishment and bees love them too!

Hope you enjoy the photos and recipe! Feel free to share or try this at home with your kids, it's such a great opportunity to teach them and seeing their interest will really, really make any mom smile <3

First , pick dandelions, better yet, watch your kids pick dandelions, you'll just need the heads. (our yard is free of pesticides, this is important when using dandelions for infused oil!) Camden was the "picker" . Thanks buddy :)

Dandelion infused oil

Things you will need:

Little hands

A mason jar with a lid

Dandelions

Oil (olive, vegetable, coconut, almond - whatever floats your boat!)

Next, spread out the dandelion heads on a surface or a towel so they can dry , if needed! (More photos because I think they're pretty, swear I'm refinishing that bench...only said that for two years ;) )

Next add your oil to your mason jar. Have your child stuff the dandelions in the oil (I filled mine up a bit , had Noelle add the dandelions then topped with more EVOO)

If you did it like I did, top off with more oil, and then seal the jar, isn't it pretty?!

Now you have one of two choices, you can let your oil steep on the windowsill for roughly a week in the sunlight, or put your jar in shallow water on the stove and boil it for a few minutes. With either process, when it's ready, strain the dandelions and put the oil into a clean glass jar , and top with your favorite essential oil for scent, if you'd like . I will be adding lavender to mine!! (10 -15 drops depending on size of jar )

Now you can use your dandelion infused oil ! Use alone topically, or create - you can add it to whipped coconut oil or shea butter and for an awesome lotion, or to beeswax for a homemade, safe, non toxic lip balm! Your infused oil can also be used as a carrier oil (for essential oil use) for homemade body balms and facial creams!

I decided to steep mine. Dandelions will spoil if you let them steep too long, so a week will do the trick :)

Discard dandelion oil after a year.

And the final step !

Replant, and make a wish while you are at it ;) Teach your children to respect the Earth , after all, it is so resourceful and treats us so well !!

Sister Session ! {Pittsburgh child photographer} http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2015/9/sister-session-pittsburgh-child-photographer Although we not only had one cancellation (thanks to me) and then a location switch last minute (thanks to a festival) I am so pleased with just how well things did work out! You'd never know the girls were in the car for a while because they were ready to pose for me and both are as gorgeous as ever! I absolutely love that they reminded me so much of myself and my little sister (same blue eyes, dark hair on her, light hair on me) especially personality wise! It's so fun to see sisters interact and such a pleasure to get to capture these times because someday they will be describing these times at each others weddings, possibly even including a photo or two on a memory board or in a slideshow. That means something to me !

Not only were the girls awesome, but I truly enjoyed my time with their down to earth, go with the flow, understanding and patient parents! It's funny how sometimes you meet someone and you know at hello they will be "your kind of people". I felt so at ease while shooting since the parents were so laid back, it absolutely helps the kids relax since there is little to no pressure!  Thank you both, so much for being SO easy to work with!

Here are some of my favorite images from our session at Frick Park!

Quality of Life http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2014/12/quality-of-life Now that we are wrapping up another wonderful year, it's that fun time again where we all re-evaluate our lives. We wait for one day, which is creeping up..to say what we are going to change about ourselves to improve our quality of life. I can't say I'm a fan of making resolutions, but I am a fan of setting obtainable personal and business goals. Read on for my take on improving quality of life for this coming year and enjoy some photos from our beach vacation :)

1. Soak it up.

All of it. The sun, the breeze, the laughter of my children, the beauty of this life. "Drink the wild air" That's right, breath it into your bones and let it rejuvenate your soul. Watch how the sun dances across water, listen to soothing rain drops and allow yourself a moment of quiet. Feel a tug from your child and turn to them with a smile. Enjoy the aroma of morning coffee, a newly opened book, a bonfire, blooming flowers. Live, and I mean really live. These experiences are the ones that will one day become distant memories. Make every.single.moment count...soak it up.

2. Go on more adventures.

Wether it be to a playground we've never visited, woods we have yet to hike, lakes we'd love to swim in, or trips and vacations.  I just want to allow my kids the experience of being totally free to explore the world around them. There is no greater peace than being surrounded by nature. Get dirty. Ok, we do dirty really well.  "At the end of the day your hair should be messy, feet dirty and eyes shining" or, something like that :)

3. Live in Simplicity.

This is a big one for me this year. It's really stressful to be surrounded by stuff. Wether it's clothing no one is wearing, items and objects that just get moved around without much use, toys galore, papers, excessing bedding/towels and so on. It's time to do a major purge around here! My kids are so much happier at camp skipping stones, digging in dirt or sand, playing in the snow and rain than they are with 64 thousand toys. It's time to make a change so that we can work on appreciating what we have and do that little thing called saving money on un unnecessary purchases.

4. Be Present. Be Early to Everything.

When it comes to spending time with family and friends I really avoid using my cell phone, answering texts and going online. I find it highly offensive and rude to be staring at a phone or keeping relationships through social media only so that is something I like to say I'm pretty good at. BUT when it comes to my own family I am totally guilty of telling the kids to wait while I answer an email, umm..pinterest (enough said), and totally get lost in all the readily available info on the web. I have recently cut my data plan way down to 1/3 of what I previously had (hello $30 savings) and do not plan to be using my cell phone for internet leisure at all, emails will be answered from the office and anything work related will wait until business hours . I feel very disrespectful toward the 3 most important people in my life. My children are 6 and 4, I feel like I've missed out on seemingly small moments that may have become wonderful memories by saying "wait, hold on, in a second" way too many times. After bed time is usually when I feel the guilt over this the most. I always get emotional when I sneak in their room and think "I should have paid attention to you more today". Is it everyday? No. It is often enough to know I need to show my own little family the same respect I show others. Another one, being late. In all honesty I am rarely late, and if I am it is literally 5-10 minutes because of traffic which still isn't an excuse. I've recently read an article someone posted on Facebook and it was so true (read it here : http://www.huffingtonpost.com/greg-savage/lateness_b_4169441.html )  . Not only will I be on time, I will be early. It is extremely selfish to make others waste their time, waiting for you. There are some instances where it is absolutely out of our control, such as life threatening emergencies..but that's about it :)

Being present and respectful will not only improve our well being and self worth but those around us will appreciate it.

5. Regain Control Over Your Happiness and Health.

There was a quote that I came across the other night on pinterest (shocker, lol) but it really put this into perspective for me. "Happiness is an inside job, don't assign anyone else that much power over your life" Eye opener. It is totally up to ME to make ME happy. Doing what I love regardless of what others think makes me happy. Watching my kids play in dirt makes me happy. Enjoying a beer with family around a bonfire after fishing, hiking, quad riding and exploring makes me happy. Having gorgeous photos of my kids that will last me my whole lifetime and one day be in the hands of my great great grandchildren makes me happy.  Reading corny yet inspirational quotes makes me happy. Laughing really, really hard makes me happy. Pretty words that are used rarely make me happy ( i.e. metanoia :(n.) the journey of changing one's mind, heart, self, or way of life ) Drinking coffee makes me happy. My happiness may be a lot different than someone else's happiness and that's ok. I do not have to give up the things that make my life worthwhile in order to impress, compete, try to be better than ANYONE. If you're competitive, compete with yourself. Do not expect others to walk around you dropping glitter and sunshine in your path to light up your day. Make your own sunshine. If sunshine makes you happy, that is :)

Health is something that is always a major problem with me. I do not have an excuse because ...i'm in control (see above, healthy = happy). I am really awesome at eating healthy in the spring/summer because farmers markets are also something that makes me happy. During the winter I feel my mood shift (again, see above, this girl needs sunshine) and my eating habits follow. Since I am missing the joy I get from the outdoors (and I'm not a huge fan of cold) I tend to find happiness in food, if you'd call it that, usually late at night after I've barely eaten all day, meaning my only source of energy is coming from the wrong carbs, bad fats, and processed yuckiness. Not to mention I can crush a whole coffee mate creamer in a day because coffee is basically all I drink. I know for a fact I feel so much better when I'm drinking water, eating wholesome and nutritious foods and exercising, even if it's a short run on the treadmill. It is something I plan to make part of my lifestyle, everyday (and I won't be waiting until the 1st to start, there is no better day than today!) I'm skipping the diets, I'm skipping the "have to do this workout on this day" I'm just going to eat right and move more. The best thing about a mother taking control of her health is that she is setting an example for her children...and likely prepares the meals, and does the shopping so the man has no choice but to follow suit ;)

6. Lower your expectations..

Just because you'd do certain things for certain people does not mean they will do them for you. It also does not mean they love you less. They just love differently. No one is obligated to help me or be a s significant part of my children's life (it's their loss). These are somethings that used to contribute to a lot of hurt and pain for me. I spent a lot of time doing for others thinking that in the future, maybe if I needed a bit of help they'd be there. Not only is this untrue, but having expectations hurts us internally (not the other person) because we open ourselves up to being disappointed. When we expect nothing from anyone (again, who is in control of MY happiness?) then anything they offer to you is appreciated! How amazing it is that changing the way we look at small things can make such a significant impact on our well being? I do spend a lot of my free time doing work or favors for family/friends, but that is because it makes ME feel good. Not ever because I'm expecting something in return. Yes my time is valuable, and I do need to decrease my yes's, not many people are willing to go to "work" for free, but when I am not as busy or have some time I love making others happy. It's kind of my thing. I'm proud of myself that I am a giver. That is a personality trait I am glad to have. Lowering expectations, or not having them, at all (unless you are that persons mother or significant other) opens up a whole new world , I promise. I plan to carry this out even more so in the coming year.

7. Stay organized, plan ahead, be productive, be proud.

This is in addition to the living simply. If you all seen my office right now you would be in total shock, I'm sure. I have never been good at keeping things in order as far as business goes, and a lot of times I have to make a to do list, to do the things I need to do, and that in itself is counterproductive. I have a busy, hectic life, but there is a way to keep it organized if I stick to a schedule. This is hard for me because I'm such a laid back/go with the flow kind of person. My days normally consist of picking my little brother up, walking he and my son to school from my moms (one block), waiting 1/2 hour, taking noelle to preschool, coming home to pay bills for an hour or something I need to do, head back to pick Noelle up from preschool, come home with her and get her lunch, set up with coloring or a movie or she brings her dolls into my office and I get some work done, then it's back to get Camden and my brother, drop him off and come home to prepare dinner , do homework, baths and bedtime then it's back to work again for me. Some days I will have my mom grab my son from school just to lengthen my time in between trips to complete a task. These are just my "everyday" normal tasks, but somedays I also have to take the kids to a sitter, come back home and remove car seats to load the car with my props, drive to work (sometimes an hour or more) shoot and drive home to unload my car, put car seats in and head back to get the kids from the sitter (usually is a 6 hour job to do a 1-2 hour shoot) . This is NOT by any means an easy thing. I am told often that I'm lucky that I get to work from home, but it's not ideal having to get my kids "set up" to occupy themselves,  never having enough consecutive hours to fully complete things, running back and forth, and being solely responsible for them, while managing a full time job while Joe works long hours. BUT it absolutely can be more manageable since I have about 4 months of trial and error under my belt. Some days I get everything done and feel like superwoman, and some days I'm in tears thinking I can't do this another day. And here we go again, who is responsible for this all? I am. And I take pride in my work especially more so since I also do not depend on anyone else to care for my children. So really, I am superwoman. I got this. I've done this for 4 years, it gets harder at time and easier at times. I have been working on a plan, a new work schedule, a household care schedule, a child schedule, a bedtime schedule, a life schedule and I have a good feeling about it, and that's enough for me right now. Organization is crucial to keeping a strict schedule. I am going at it alone but hiring a professional is something I've considered as well , and this may also be the year that I hire a housekeeper to come through once a month and do a deep clean because something that I absolutely do NOT want to fit into my schedule, hehe! In the end, you can't dwell on it, you just have to be proud that you are still standing and working toward order, look at yourself in the mirror at night and say good job!  We all have the same 24 hours a day, end excuses and make time for what is truly important. Tell Beyonce you "don't have time" ;) ( and yes, my daughter enjoys hand me down boys undies, lol)

8. It's never too late to start.

Start something new, do something you've always wanted to do wether it's escaping to a log cabin in the middle of no where (that's so me) or shopping in NYC. It's never to late to follow your heart, your dreams and your destiny. There are so many things I want to be when I grow up, and the future..it's so bright!

Fall Recap (Part 1) http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2014/11/fall-recap-part-1 I have been busy, busy editing..and shooting, and starting my little ones fall activities. Also getting into the swing of being a Mom to a kindergartener, and a preschooler! What a hectic time of year it is, and althought photos take a tiny bit longer during this time, it is so worth the wait! The colors are amazing and make a gorgeous backdrop especially when your dressed in snuggly sweaters, awesome riding boots, layers, long sleeved tunics and scarves! Here is a quick peek into what I've been working on! Hope you all enjoy! Remember for next year to book your fall session in the late summer- I book up quickly and really felt badly having to turn some awesome families away!

Newborn Ryan : Pittsburgh Newborn Photographer http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2014/6/newborn-ryan-pittsburgh-newborn-photographer A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing this sweet, gorgeous tiny little boy (any baby under 7 lb. is tiny to me! hehe!) Ryan fought sleep a little at first, but once he was out I was able to quickly switch sets/positions and he was a dream both asleep and awake!  Not only was Ryan wonderful, but his Mommy was one of the most laid back clients I've ever worked with! It was so awesome that Ryan's Grandma lives (basically) across the street from me, that means I didn't have an hour or more drive to think and ponder and end up a nervous wreck (yes after this long, I still get nervous before every session!) . I really enjoyed my time chatting with Ryan's Mommy, aunt, grandparents and cuddling this sweet boy! I love getting my baby fixes in!! Here is a little preview of my shoot with Ryan!

The Rice Family [Pittsburgh Family Photographer] http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2014/6/the-rice-family-pittsburgh-family-photographer I met this beautiful family a few months ago for Easter sessions, and shortly after Tanya booked two more sessions with me! Not only are their daughters adorable, but as a whole they are just a picture perfect family! My session with them was a BREEZE and is quite possibly my favorite to date. As usual, I had a hard time making cuts, so once again here is a large preview from the beautiful evening spent with them ! Can't wait to see you all later this month for the girls mini sessions :) So in love with this session!

Stephanie's Family [Pittsburgh Family Photographer} http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2014/6/stephanies-family-pittsburgh-family-photographer I had the pleasure of photographing a friend from high school and her beautiful family a few weeks ago. She has been wanting a session with me for a while so I was just as excited as her! It's always such an honor to photograph the family of someone I grew up with, or went to school with! It really makes me happy to see everyone becoming mothers, and meeting their beautiful children! Lexi is such a sweet girl, who basically needed no direction! She was ready to go with a new pose with each click of the shutter, and I am positive she had a blast playing in the dandelion field! Little Travis is obviously perfectly adorable and just turned one! He was LOVING the grass, and playing in the mulch, just being a boy! Stephanie and Travis are very amazing parents, I could tell that within 5 minutes of being with them! I am so happy for you, Stephanie! You have such a perfect and gorgeous family and I am soo glad to have had the opportunity to meet you all and capture some memories for you! I had a teeny tiny bit of trouble making cuts from this session, so here is a big preview :)

The Davidson Family {Pittsburgh Family Photographer} http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2014/1/childhood-pittsburgh-lifestyle-and-family-photographer  Diana contacted me because their beautiful little boy, Sebastian was turning two and I was excited when she gave me the lead and we decided to go with a lifestyle/potrait/snow session! I woke up to beautiful sunshine and snow- perfect!  I was welcomed into their beautiful home and spent some time with Sebastian as he played with his toys and warm up to me a bit! I was so impressed at Sebastian's ability to speak both spanish and english because he JUST turned two, he also told me ALL his colors, and talked about animals, such a smart little man! It was perfect timing for the session as Diana's parents traveled to visit with them for the holidays, it was awesome to be able to capture some memories for Sebastian's grandparents who very obviously love him so much! There were lots of laughs and fun during our time together, I was happy to be able to capture real life moments with this gorgeous family, as well as some formal photos of everyone together! Thank you all for welcoming me into your world for a few hours!   Here are a few of my favorites from our time together :)

I was so excited to meet sweet baby Lucia and her older siblings! Due to illness, I had to reschedule this sweet girl as I didn't want to spread my germs, at almost a month old, Lucia rocked her newborn session! Her older siblings were perfect little models and so loving toward their new baby sister! I always try to capture some singular shots of each child as well, this allows you to create gorgeous, coordinating clusters of prints or canvas wraps!!!  Their Mommy is the sweetest and I loved chatting with her while I worked, always makes time fly by! Thanks for welcoming me into your home, and your lives, it is always an honor to capture these moments for such wonderful people !  Her is a sneak peek from their session! All things boy (Pittsburgh child photographer) http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2013/9/all-things-boy-pittsburgh-child-photographer I spent a cloudy evening with handsome Mr. Camden and his beautiful mother! We had such a great time chatting and Camden cracks me up! He is all boy! Not only his Mommy sidekick, but he brought his dump trucks for photos, and absolutely loved pretending he was a firefighter in my pedal car :) He loved jumping from the stumps and his laugh makes my heart melt! Thanks so much for bringing Camden to me again, Chrissy! He is one special and perfect little boy! I have enjoyed photographing him since he was just a baby and am thankful to have you as clients!

Aubrey is Turning One || Pittsburgh (White Oak) Child Photographer http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2013/9/aubrey-is-turning-one-pittsburgh-white-oak-child-photographer A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting new clients and their sweet little daughter! Not only were Aubrey's parents so easy to talk to, down to earth and kind, but their daughter was a little gem! She was such a beauty and had me aching for another baby (and yes this happens every weekend when I shoot babies! ;) ) I loved playing around and getting her to smile, and her parents were super helpful in that department too! She showed me some of her skills- such as crawling, standing, waving, and showing me who was "soo big!" . It is such an honor to get to experience these milestones with the parents, I am always in awe over my little clients! I also pretty normally (gently) force parents to get in at least one photo with their child- luckily Aubrey's were pretty cooperative ;)  I wish you a very happy birthday, beautiful little girl. A new year will bring your first steps, your first words, and even greater bonds. Maybe this year you will tell Mommy you love her, or Daddy that you want a hug. Maybe you'll do a dance or something funny that you're parents will remember forever. As hard as it is to watch our little ones grow up, it's a good feeling to know we have these important moments documented, that we can look back on for the rest of our lifetimes. That someday, these memories will be on print in the hands of our great grandchildren, great great grandchilden and even beyond. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for choosing me as your photographer!

The Stroyne Family || Pittsburgh Family Photographer http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2013/6/the-stroyne-family-pittsburgh-family-photographer Let me start by saying the Stroyne family is beyond gorgeous.  The last time I seen them was just a week or so before Camden was due to come into the world so I was really looking forward to meeting this beautiful little girl! Big brother Carson has grown SO much in such a short amout of time. He was so adorable, with his sweet smile and telling me about cars and trucks :) Not to mention the eyes on these two. Heart explosion! Although it was a bit chilly, it turned out to be a beautiful day for a session. If possible, I try to shoot around sunset but with small children and the late sunset at this time of year sometimes it's just not doable. Well rested children are ideal, of course-not sleepy ones who have been up past their bedtimes! This was a new challendge for me, the sun was high and harsh. Fortunately I was able to find some awesome spots to shoot where the lighting didn't pose a problem!

I really enjoyed working with this family again and I can't wait to see them in the future :) Kristina and Tim - thank you for trusting me with your memories :)

Newborn Harrison || Pittsburgh Newborn Photographer http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2013/3/newborn-harrison-pittsburgh-newborn-photographer  I had the opportunity to work with this sweet baby boy and I couldn't have been happier to get my newborn cuddles in! Harrison put up a good fight  but in the end I was about to capture all of his sweetness while he drifted off to dream land! I enjoyed chatting with his Momma about "mommy stuff" because we all know how rare it is to get some adult interaction and conversation in when we are raising our children! Thanks for laughs and chats Katie! Looking forward to our fall session!

::Sisters:: http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2012/10/-sisters I was so glad that we finally got to do our sunset birthday session for sweet Lauren! Lauren is very special to me, not only because I have photographed her for about 2 years now (and quite often because her Mommy rocks!) but because she just melts my heart with her gorgeous smile and her ability to find fun in everything! Lauren did a lot of running and playing and I was so glad to capture those candid moments!

I also did a few photos of little sister Caroline which was wonderful because she gave me soo many sweet smiles! I am so grateful to have met her when she was just a tiny infant, and have the opportunity to watch her grow into a toddler who is unbelievably smart, sweet and shy-just like my own little girl! All of these little ones have a special place in my heart and I'm so grateful to get to work with so many amazing children!

Enjoy :)

Kendall {6 months} http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2012/6/kendall-6-months I had the pleasure of spending some time with beautiful little Kendall and her amazing mommy and Grandma for an evening session at my favorite location :) Kendall was an absolutely stunning baby girl and she just cracked us up with her expressions! It's so fun to see how much personality can come out of a 6 month old! My favorite thing about photographing babies at this age is the fact that you know when you see those smiles, they are 100% real :) Thank you for hiring me to photograph your daughter, Kim! it was such a fun time and I hope to see you all again soon !

Here are some of my favs from the session (yes, I know I choose many favorites, but who can resist this sweet little face? Not I!)

Jenna's Senior Session http://www.tinyheartphotography.net/blog/2012/5/jennas-senior-session A few weeks ago I did my first senior session! I couldn't be happier with my first experience of photographing a senior, even more so that my first model is such a beautiful young lady, and my little cousin! I gifted her a senior session for her graduation present and everything went so wonderfully! I must say it was such a relaxing session, she didn't run from me ;) haha! Jenna, I am so proud of you for all of your accomplishments, keeping good grades, and for having the drive to do all that you do for your friends and family. You are truly beyond your years with your responsibilities always being your top priority, and juggling all that you do with no complaints. I know your mom is looking down of you  with pride that she birthed such an amazing, beautiful, smart and loving daughter! I look forward to watching you accomplish great things! Lots of love!
